5 Tips for Boarding Your Dog While Away

Last updated 7 years ago

There are many things to get in order when you are planning a trip away from home.  Will you be using Orlando airport parking?  Who will be watering your plants?  But perhaps the most important question is what arrangements you will make for your dog if he or she is not able to come along.  More and more dog owners are making use of the convenience and 24-hour care of pet boarding facilities.

To make plans easier, consider an Orlando facility where you can have your long-term parking arrangements and dog boarding arrangements done together.  Follow these tips to prepare for dog boarding.

1.      Take a look at the boarding facilities you are considering.  Every dog has a different set of needs, and only you know your dog’s needs.  Examine the pens and holding areas.  Cages and kennels are fine for some dogs, but in others, this type of holding creates unnecessary anxiety in your dog.

2.      Ask about the facility’s routine for boarded dogs.  How often will they be let out for walks?  How long will those walks be?  Ask about the other kinds of social interaction your dog will experience during his stay. Compatre these routines against your dog’s unique needs.

3.      Once you’ve chosen a boarding facility, you will need to pack a bag for your dog.  The boarding facility you make arrangements with will likely have a list of required items, such as food, a collar, and maybe a leash.  The list should also have the do’s and don’ts of items to leave at home and items to bring.

4.      Packing enough of your dog’s normal food for your time away is essential.  You may also want to consider packing some treats and one or two favorite toys.  Your dog may also like the comfort of their own bed.

5.      Bringing a little bit of home along will help your dog in the new environment, but consult with the boarding facility to be sure the items you are planning to bring are okay.  You don’t want to pack anything that’s irreplaceable or expensive because items can get lost or damaged at doggy hotels.
